Research

We have known for some time that we need to improve our understanding of the Cardigan Bay bottlenose dolphins and their interaction with people. Our level of understanding of the dolphins directly influences our ability to make good decisions about their conservation. We need further research in key areas, and we need to make the best use we can of the information that we already have.

Recent projects, such as the EU ‘LIFE’ funded review and collation of relevant dolphin literature, and the development of a photographic identification database, have brought together much existing information. Disseminating the results of completed research to the right people is essential, and it is intended that a copy of the literature database for wide use by relevant organisations and individuals will be developed.

In addition to collating existing information, we will continue to support ongoing projects that provide information valuable to site management including: the Marine Strandings Project; maintaining the regional Sea Watch Foundation cetacean sightings database, and research into cetacean site use and local boating traffic by the Ceredigion Heritage Coast and local volunteers.
